Amber glass or HDPE: which container to choose for DMSO, chlorite and chlorine dioxide
Choosing the right container is key to keeping a technical product in good condition. The two materials we use at Aquapurelife are amber glass and HDPE (high-density polyethylene). Both are safe, but they are not equally suitable for everything.
Amber glass
- Protection from light: the amber colour filters out much of the ultraviolet radiation that degrades light-sensitive substances.
- Inert and impermeable: it does not react with most substances and does not let gases escape.
- Drawbacks: heavier and fragile against impacts.
HDPE (high-density polyethylene)
- Mechanical strength: withstands knocks and drops; ideal for transport and large formats (5, 10 and 20 L).
- Chemical resistance: compatible with many technical products, such as DMSO and sodium chlorite.
- Drawbacks: it is somewhat permeable to certain gases, so it is not the best option for solutions containing dissolved gas.
Which container to use for each product
| Product | Amber glass | HDPE | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMSO 99.9% and 70% | Yes | Yes | Glass for small formats; HDPE for jerrycans |
| Sodium chlorite 25% | Yes | Yes | Both suitable; HDPE more practical for transport |
| Chlorine dioxide 3000 ppm | Yes | Not recommended | Amber glass, tightly closed and kept cold |
| Methylene blue and Lugol's | Yes | — | Glass with pipette |
| Powders (zeolite, diatomaceous earth, chlorite 80%) | — | Yes | Airtight, dry jar |
Materials to avoid
- Polystyrene (PS) and PVC with DMSO: DMSO can soften or dissolve them.
- Metal containers with oxidisers such as chlorite or chlorine dioxide.
- Containers without an airtight closure for hygroscopic (such as DMSO) or volatile substances.
Empty containers at Aquapurelife
If you need to repack or split into smaller quantities, we have amber glass bottles with dosing cap, HDPE bottles with dropper cap, glass spray bottles and 5 L HDPE jerrycans. You will find them all in the containers and accessories collection.
General storage tips
- Always label the container with the product name, concentration and date.
- Do not reuse containers that have held other substances.
- Store oxidisers separately from acids and combustible materials.
- Keep all products out of the reach of children.
