Sodium chlorite: what it is, sizes, storage and where to buy it
Sodium chlorite (formula NaClO₂, CAS 7758-19-2) is an inorganic salt for technical and industrial use. This guide explains what it is, the sizes it is sold in, how to store it and what to check when buying.
What is sodium chlorite?
It is the sodium salt of chlorous acid: a white or slightly yellowish solid, highly soluble in water and an oxidiser. Do not confuse it with sodium chlorate (NaClO₃) or sodium hypochlorite (bleach, NaClO).
| Item | Value |

| Formula | NaClO₂ |
| CAS no. | 7758-19-2 |
| Nature | Oxidiser |
| Common forms | 25 % solution and ~80 % solid |
Technical uses
- On-site chlorine dioxide generation for water treatment systems, by reaction with an acid activator.
- Oxidising and bleaching agent in industrial processes (textile, paper).
- Raw material in technical formulations.
Sizes
- 25 % liquid: 60 ml to 20 L in HDPE or glass. See sodium chlorite 25 %.
- 80 % powder: 0.5 kg to 20 kg and a 60 kg drum. See chlorite powder.
- Kit with activator: chlorite 25 % + hydrochloric acid 4 % in separate bottles. See kits.

Storage and safety
- Keep in the original container, tightly closed, in a cool, dry place away from light.
- Store away from acids, organic matter and combustible materials: contact with acids releases chlorine dioxide.
- Handle with gloves and goggles in a ventilated area; with powder, avoid raising dust.
- Keep out of the reach of children and always read the safety data sheet (SDS).
