How to Make Chlorine Dioxide at 3000 ppm for Water Disinfection (Complete Guide 2025)
🧪 How to Make Chlorine Dioxide (CDS) at 3000 ppm – A Practical Step-by-Step Guide
Chlorine dioxide (CDS) is a biocidal agent approved for the disinfection of drinking water in tanks, closed circuits, and hydraulic systems. This guide teaches you how to obtain a concentrated 3000 ppm CDS solution using a professional, safe, and reproducible method.

🧰 Necessary materials
- 25% Sodium Chlorite (NaClO₂)
- 4% hydrochloric acid
- Distilled water
- 500 ml airtight glass container
- Glass jar to store CDs
- Syringe or measuring cup
- Glasses, gloves and mask
- Fridge
🔬 Step-by-step procedure
1. Prepare the environment
Work in a well-ventilated area with protective clothing. Clean all utensils before use.
2. Initial assembly
Fill the large container with 250 ml of water. Place the glass in the center without letting it float. This is where the gas will be generated.
3. First activation (12 - 24 hours)
Place 5 ml of chlorite + 5 ml of activating acid into the small bottle. Close the container tightly. Wait 12-24 hours in a dark place.
4. Second activation (another 12 - 24 hours)
Repeat the mixture (5+5 ml) in the same bottle. Wait another 12-24 hours.
When finished, the gas will have completely saturated the water in the airtight container: you will obtain CDS at ~3000 ppm.
❄️ Conservation
- Store in amber glass, refrigerated (8 °C)
- Do not freeze or shake
- Shelf life: approximately 6 months
